Louie sings, “What a Wonderful World.”

It is, isn’t it?

The Stimulus Package of President Obama has passed both the House and the Senate… President Obama will sign the bill into law on Tuesday,February 17, 2009, in Denver, CO.  The timing of the passing and signing is tied in with great moments in our history … this will be remembered in history in the same way. Let us pray it will provide the economy what it needs to ‘jump start’ itself.

Not much about gardening today… but lots about God’s beautiful world. Also, a chance to see what WE DO to keep it wonderful.

As always, remember… “Diggin’ in the DIRT is FUN!”

FRIDAY… finally!

T. G. I. F. !

The week has been the l.o.n.g.e.s.t one in quite sometime! Ending a class at AIU. Trying to finish a huge project, 20+ pages for the class, and getting ready for the next one, Statistics. I need a tutor! Any volunteers? We could Skype the sessions… reply to this post if you are a wiz in Statistics!

What else is happening at living rural. .. hubby has been working on ‘projects’ this week - he dropped the utility trailer on his finger! It looks awful, but he will not see anyone about it. You can tell he’s in pain. Men, why do you put yourselves through this agony? It is not “manly” - it is “stupid.” I love you and your hurt finger, hubby-of-mine! Kiss

Not much else going on. The movie “New in Town” is so very funny, do not miss it! As is, “He’s Just Not Into You.”

The beach has been beautiful… sad to go home.

2 0 0 9!

HAPPY NEW YEAR

HAVE A HAPPY, HEALTHY, SAFE, and BLESSED YEAR!

 New Year

Another fresh new year is here . . .
Another year to live!
To banish worry, doubt, and fear,
To love and laugh and give!

This bright new year is given me

To live each day with zest . . .

To daily grow and try to be

My highest and my best!

I have the opportunity

Once more to right some wrongs,

To pray for peace, to plant a tree,

And sing more joyful songs!

A GARDEN WITHOUT FUSS …

Condensation

Well not much fuss…

TERRARIUMS …

Take Care of Themselves

Giving You Low-maintenance

beauty, all winter

LONG!

…  a clear container encasing a plant or a collection of plants that thrive under the same conditions. It creates its own ecosystem: plants release moisture, which condenses inside the vessel (usually glass) and trickles back into the soil  This “rain effect” allows the plants inside to go month’s without watering.

Implements you will need to assemble your creation…

  1. Rake and shovel: use a piece of string to tie a pickle or dessert fork to one chopstick and a demitasse or ice teaspoon to another
  2. Tamping tool: stick a wine cork onto the end of a grilling skewer, for pressing plant and soil
  3. Narrow bulb trowel: find in garden shop, planting, preparing soil
  4. Pruners: find in a garden shop, trim dead leaves
  5. Mister: any fine mister bottle will do, clean thoroughly,  hydrate terrarium with fine mist

Basics:

  • Place terrarium in indirect light
  • Usually will not need watering for 4 - 6 months - water when plants begin to wilt or condensation stops on container
  • Mist sides of terrarium with ounce or two of distilled water, instead of leaves of plants
  • If sides of vessel are foggy or large droplets form on top - a sign of to much moisture, remove top for a day or two to dehumidify

One Plant:

Simple … container and just one plant

  1. Pick a vessel - a large cloche with saucer (13 1/4 inches high by 13 3/4 inches in diameter), $69, www..smithandhawken.com
  2. Make it pretty - a maidenhair fern in a modest unadorned pot, so plant is focus
  3. Position the pot - place plant in center, prune its leaves, so none are touching sides or top of container

You will need:

  • A glass cloche (a bell-shaped cover) and a saucer, or a large-mouthed apothecary or cookie jar
  • Pebbles for drainage
  • Sterilized soilless potting mix
  • A mister with distilled water
  • Small scissors
  • A flower pot
  • Humidity loving houseplant (tropical, like a Boston fern, Flame Violet, Maiden Fern), compact, slow growing

How to set it up:

  • Arrange a one inch layer of pebbles in base
  • Transfer the plant from original plastic pot to a ceramic or clay pot
  • Add potting mix to fill
  • Use scissors to trim yellow or brown leaves
  • Mist soil
  • Cover

Christmas Eve …

 Merry Christmas!

Today is December 24, 2008, Christmas Eve!

If your family is like mine, they are very excited for

this night and celebrating the birth of baby Jesus.

.and you will follow the Star …

The Christmas Story can be found in the New International Bible, LUKE 1: 26 -38 and LUKE 2.

An animated version which is wonderful for anyone, but especially for children can be found by clicking here The Christmas Story.

A wonderful Christmas quote is …

Christmas! The very word brings joy to our hearts. No matter how we may dread the rush, the long Christmas lists for gifts and cards to be bought and given–when Christmas Day comes there is still the same warm feeling we had as children, the same warmth that enfolds our hearts and our homes.”
~ Joan Winmill Brown, American author and editor.

A wonderful Christmas recipe from my mom follows … try it, you’ll love it … and so will SANTA!

Winterizing…

YARD TOOLS.

This may be late for those under a foot of snow, but…  print it, keep it…  for next FALL.

Yard tools will benefit from some upkeep before you put them away for the winter. Here are some helpful tips before putting your yard tools away…

  1. Drain the oil, take used oil to your town’s recycling facility or visit earth911.org
  2. Replace worn parts, inspect and replace missing nuts and screws, make sure gas caps have O-rings to keep moisture and dust out.
  3. Replace fuel filters how to: curve a 6″ length of metal coat hanger into a hook - reach into gas tank & fish out the fuel line, the filter dangles from the end - pull it off and install the new one.
  4. Clean the plugs how to remove plugs from gas powered tools spray with brake spray cleaner - scrape off black bits with stiff wire brush or replace plugs
  5. Preserve the gas - add fuel stabilizer (follow directions, keeps gas fresh for 6 months) OR drain gas excess in clean pan - run engine with choke on, pressing the prime button until engine quits.
  6. Get the GUNK off - can trap moisture and cause rust - for safety… disconnect the spark plug and remove the blade.
  7. Change the air filter - replace torn filters - remove trapped debris often.
  8. Lubricate - spray hinges and moving parts with lubricant before storing - wipe tung oil on wooden handles to keep them from cracking.

These tips do take time to complete, but you and your garden tools will be happy you took the time when Spring pops in! Thanks to Sal Vaglica, This Old House, (11, 2008 p. 24)
